Whale Dreams Studio / Selected Art / Paddles
The Alutiiq hunter's moist prized (and essential) personal possession was his paddle. In a world where virtually all travel was done by water, the paddle was with him for all of his essential functions as hunting, fishing, socializing and long distance travel. Along with drum, whistles rattles and masks it also had ceremonial purpose. The ceremonial paddle (painted with fish and sea mammals as well as geometric design) was witnessed as being used in ceremonies or plays as they were described , from the first encounter by the Russians.

From descriptions by early travelers as Davydov in 1802 in Kodiak , the paddles and other items were used in intense dramatic performances that though described well, are hard to visualize. These ceremonies or performances were held during winter festivals.

There are also accounts of miniature paddles used in ceremonies between shaman and whale hunters.

The paddle shape is hard for some to understand. Used as we now use kayaks, I'm afraid they would not work well. Used as in the modern use in the covered over canoe (C1 and C2) in competitive racing, it makes sense. the Alutiiq kayaker (canoeist!) kneeled rather than sat in his baidarka (Russian for little boat) and used a single bladed paddle, from a more upright position. The shape of the paddles were long and pointed as to enter the water quietly while hunting. As the blade was fully half the length of the paddle, the surface area needed for power paddling was there when needed . just as if shifting into a lower gear. the shape also was beneficial in that it moved easily through the wind while being brought forward. I feel that this is also pleasing to the eye.

I have only found three examples of these ceremonial paddles. The old ones were beautiful and intricately painted. I have made paddles based on these old paddles (in the British Museum), as well as designed new ones using the old design elements ( trying to stick to the spirit of the old ones. ) I make full length ( approx. 5' ) as well as miniature 24'" versions that I usually mount in shadowboxes and frames. I also make tiny baby paddles (8") occasionally that can be used for Christmas tree ornaments. ( Winter Festival!)

The framed and shadowboxed paddles are mounted on a decorated background.
